Conservatories St Helens

From the home of British glass: conservatories that get the glazing right

St Helens has been the home of British glassmaking since the Pilkington Brothers invented the float glass process here in the 1950s. Most of the glass in any modern conservatory in the country can be traced back to that single factory. We mention it because it matters - if you're putting glazing into a conservatory in WA9, WA10 or WA11, getting the spec right matters more than the brochure colour.

Pure Conservatories is a Wirral-based installer. We design new conservatories, replace old ones that are past their best, and fit Leka solid roofs to existing conservatories that have gone unusable. No four-hour pitch in your front room. No mystery pricing. If you only need a new roof, we will say so.

Whether you're adding a new conservatory to a 1980s semi in Windle, replacing one that came with the house in Eccleston Park, or putting a tiled roof on a tired polycarbonate over a Sutton bungalow, we work to the same approach. Properly specified. Built to last. Quoted at a number that doesn't change at the kitchen table.

Many people in St Helens have been thinking about this job for years and stopped after one bad quote. We work at your pace.

Solid Roof Conservatories in St Helens

St Helens has thousands of conservatories built between the mid-1990s and the mid-2000s with polycarbonate roofs. They were the cheap option at the time and they now do all the things you don't want a roof to do: bake the room in July, freeze it in December, and sound like a snare drum when it rains. Half the conservatories in Thatto Heath, Sutton and Parr fit that description.

The Leka warm roof is what we fit in their place. It's a lightweight insulated tiled system that lands on the existing frames and base, usually without strengthening work. The exterior is tiled to look like part of the house. The interior is plastered and painted to the same finish as the room it leads off. After that, the temperature stops being the reason you don't sit in there.

Average roof upgrade in St Helens takes three to five days. We assess suitability before quoting, not after invoicing.

Types of conservatory roof

Victorian Conservatories

The Victorian style is defined by its multi-faceted bay front and ornate pitched roof. Built before the inter-war period, it's the format that suits the older property stock around Eccleston and Windle where the gardens are deeper and the houses are set back.

You'll see it pair particularly well with the larger Edwardian and Victorian villas that line the streets either side of Eccleston Park, where the bay front carries the existing architectural feel forward into the conservatory.

Edwardian Conservatories

Square or rectangular footprint. No wasted corners. The Edwardian style is the practical option for people who want to put a dining table or a desk in their conservatory without working around angled walls.

It's the format we end up specifying most often for the post-1980 estate housing across Windle, Eccleston Park and the newer parts of Rainford, where the rear gardens are rectangular and the existing house has clean, simple lines that the Edwardian shape extends without clashing.

Modern and Lean-To Conservatories

The lean-to and modern styles tuck under the existing roofline with a clean, single-slope profile. The advantage is they don't dominate the rear elevation of the house, which matters on bungalows and shorter properties.

This is the style we recommend for the bungalows around Rainford and Billinge, and for properties in Thatto Heath and Parr where a steeply-pitched Victorian or Edwardian roof would block first-floor windows or look out of proportion.

Which style is right depends on the property, the way you want to use the room, and the budget. We go through all of it on the site visit, point out the things that won't work for your house honestly, and quote you on the spot or the next working day. No upselling. No "limited time" offer that conveniently expires when you ask for time to think.

What We Offer

Our Services

Three things we do, and only three. We don't fit windows. We don't do extensions. All conservatory work, built to Building Regulations, and finished to a standard we'd specify on family houses.

Old polycarbonate or glass roof off. Leka tiled system on. Three to five days from start to finish on most St Helens jobs. Most installations land between £8,000 and £14,000 - size, glazing options and the access route are the three things that move the price.
Bespoke conservatories and orangeries built around your property and how you actually want to use the room. Most include a Leka solid roof from day one - in St Helens weather, that's the spec that makes a conservatory genuinely usable in February. Typical full builds run £15,000 to £25,000.
Existing conservatory looks tired but the structure is fine? We strip back and refit: insulation, plastered ceilings, downlights, electrics, flooring, heating, roof windows, gutters and trims. We handle the Building Regulations notification with St Helens Borough Council so you don't have to.
How We Do It

Our Process

Most new builds in St Helens run seven to ten days, plus a finishing day for cleaning. Roof-only upgrades are quicker - three to five days. The opening gets weather-sealed every night, so your house doesn't end up exposed to a wet Merseyside week.

Initial Consultation:

We visit, look at the existing conservatory or the proposed location, and ask what you actually want to use the room for. No four-hour seated pitch. No phone call to head office to drop the price. If your existing roof is the only issue, we'll tell you. If the whole structure has had it, we'll explain why.

Design:

Our designer puts together a visual of your conservatory or roof upgrade - style, glazing spec, window configuration - so both you and your partner can see what's actually being built. Reduces the day-of-installation surprises to zero.

Quote and Approval:

Written quote with the price broken down by frame, roof system, glass spec, and any extras. The figure on the quote is the figure on the invoice. No follow-up phone call from a sales manager to negotiate it down after you've said no.

Installation:

Our installation team runs the whole job - groundworks, frames, roof system, glass, finishing. Site swept and cleared every day. A proper deep clean at the end so the room is ready to use, not ready to clean.

Orangeries St Helens

If a traditional conservatory feels too lightweight for your property, an orangery splits the difference. Brick or rendered pillars at the corners, large glazing panels between them, and a flat or tiled lantern roof on top. Thermal performance closer to a proper extension. Daylight closer to a conservatory.

This is the format we end up recommending for the larger detached houses in Rainford, Eccleston and the affluent end of the Windle ward, where the property carries a more substantial extension visually and the budget allows for the additional brickwork.

Conservatory Roof Upgrade in St Helens

If the rest of the conservatory is sound but the roof is the problem - too cold, too hot, leaking at the joints, sounding like rain on tin - the roof is what needs fixing. Not the whole conservatory.

The Leka tiled system replaces the existing polycarbonate or glass in three to five days. The frames stay in place. The base stays in place. Only the roof comes off, and only the roof goes back on.

If we look at it and that's genuinely all you need, that's what we'll quote for. Not a full rebuild dressed up as the only option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my St Helens conservatory only needs a new roof?

Common job here. Many of the conservatories across Thatto Heath, Sutton and Parr are 20-30 years old with polycarbonate roofs that have done their time. If the frames and base are sound, fitting a Leka warm roof is all you need. Typical cost is £8,000 to £14,000. We will say so on the site visit if that's the whole job - we don't talk people into rebuilds they don't need.

Do you do hard sells or pressure tactics?

No. We turn up, look at the job, ask how you want to use the room, and write you a quote. The number is the number. No follow-up call from a manager to drop the price. We've worked in St Helens long enough to know how people round here feel about that approach.

Do I need planning permission for a conservatory in St Helens?

Most don't. Permitted development rights cover the majority of conservatories in St Helens, subject to the size and positioning criteria set by St Helens Borough Council. Conservation areas and listed properties are exceptions. We check this for you on the site visit. For solid roof retrofits we handle the building control notification on your behalf.

How does a solid roof compare to glass or polycarbonate?

Significantly better thermal performance. The Leka warm roof reduces heat loss by a large margin, takes the overheating problem off the table entirely in summer, cuts the drumming noise from rain, and lowers the heating bill. Externally it looks like a proper tiled roof. Internally it's plastered and painted - feels like a room, not a glasshouse.

How long will the work take?

Roof-only upgrades are three to five days. A new build conservatory is seven to ten days, plus a finishing and cleaning day. We weather-seal every night, so the property doesn't sit open between visits.
