Conservatories Birkenhead

A local Wirral company designing and re-roofing conservatories for Birkenhead homes

Pure Conservatories is based in Eastham on the Wirral, a short drive from any Birkenhead postcode. We design and install new conservatories and orangeries, and we replace tired polycarbonate and glass roofs with the Leka warm roof system.

Most of the conservatories we re-roof in Birkenhead were originally fitted between the late 1990s and mid-2000s. They've done their time. A modern warm roof brings the room back into daily use without the cost or disruption of a brick extension.
  • Cheaper than a traditional home extension
  • Warm in winter, cool in summer
  • Energy efficient with improved thermal performance
  • Quick, clean installation in just a few days
  • Built to Building Regulations
  • 10 year guarantee on all work

10 Year Guarantee

Whether you want a brand new conservatory on a Prenton semi or a roof replacement on a 90s lean-to in Tranmere, the outcome is the same: a room that holds heat in January and stays usable in July, for a fraction of the cost of a traditional extension.

Solid Roof Conservatories in Birkenhead

Most of the conservatories we replace roofs on in Birkenhead were fitted in the polycarbonate era - late 1990s to mid 2000s. The roof is the weak point. Polycarbonate yellows, leaks, and gives up. Early glass roofs are heavy on heat loss and worse on summer overheating. Either way, the room becomes the place nobody sits in.

The Leka warm roof solves both ends of the problem. It's a lightweight tiled roof with proper insulation built in, designed to replace your existing conservatory roof on the frames you already have. The interior is plastered and finished like the rest of the house - no exposed beams, no daylight through the joints, no temperature swing.

The tiles are picked to match your home's existing roofline. On a 1930s Prenton semi that means a tile that reads as part of the house. On a Victorian Tranmere terrace it sits as if it was always meant to be there. The finish is the difference between a conservatory and a proper room.

Most Birkenhead roof replacements take three to five days on site. The frame stays, the glass stays where you want it, the room comes back into use the week the work is done.

Types of conservatory roof

The right conservatory depends on the house. A Tranmere terrace with a narrow rear yard takes a different design to a Prenton detached with a deep south-facing garden. Here are the three styles that fit most Birkenhead properties.

Victorian Conservatories

A Victorian conservatory has a multi-faceted bay front and a steeply pitched roof. It suits the Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis you see across Tranmere, Rock Ferry, and Oxton lower edges - the architectural detail matches the period of the house. Generous glazing on three or five facets pulls light in from every angle.

Edwardian Conservatories

Edwardian conservatories are rectangular, which means every square foot is usable floor space. The flat walls make furniture placement easy - a six-seater dining table, a corner sofa, a desk against the back wall. It's the design we fit most often on 1930s and post-war semis in Prenton, Noctorum, Upton, and Bidston, where the rear garden has the depth to take it.

Modern and Lean-To Conservatories

A lean-to is the right answer when the rear of the house is single-storey or you're working with a tight garden. Common across the older Birkenhead terraces in Tranmere, Rock Ferry, and Higher Tranmere where the rear yard is modest and the kitchen sits on a back extension. The simple roofline keeps the cost down and the build quick.

Orangeries Birkenhead

An orangery looks like part of the house, not a tacked-on conservatory. Brick or rendered pillars frame large glazed sections, with a lantern or flat insulated roof. It's the right call on the larger detached and semi-detached properties in Oxton, Prenton, and Noctorum, where the orangery sits in keeping with the period and proportions of the original house.

We design and install bespoke orangeries across Birkenhead and the wider Wirral.

Conservatory Roof Upgrade in Birkenhead

If your conservatory is from the 1998 to 2008 wave, the roof is almost certainly the reason you don't use it. Polycarbonate that's gone yellow, glass that turns the room into a greenhouse in summer and a fridge in winter.

A Leka roof upgrade replaces the roof, keeps the frames, and brings the room back into daily use. Three to five days on site, full clean on completion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need planning permission for a conservatory in Birkenhead?

Most Birkenhead homes don't need planning permission for a conservatory - it falls under permitted development as long as the size and position meet the standard criteria. The exceptions are listed properties and homes inside one of the Birkenhead conservation areas (Hamilton Square, Oxton Village, Clifton Park, Devonshire Park, Rock Park, Tranmere, and parts of Higher Tranmere). For those, we handle the planning application as part of the project. We confirm exactly where you stand at the free site visit.

Which conservatory style suits a Birkenhead home?

It depends on the house. Victorian terraces and Edwardian semis - common across Tranmere, Rock Ferry, and Oxton lower edges - usually take a Victorian-style conservatory or a lean-to. 1930s and post-war semis in Prenton, Noctorum, Upton, and Bidston tend to suit an Edwardian rectangle. Larger detached properties in Oxton and Prenton are often the right home for an orangery rather than a conservatory.

How does the Leka warm roof system work?

The Leka system is a lightweight tiled roof with insulation built into the panels. It replaces your existing polycarbonate or glass roof on the frames you already have, then the interior is plastered and finished like a normal ceiling. The result is a room that holds heat properly in winter and stays cool in summer, without the heating bills of a glass roof or the noise of polycarbonate in heavy rain.

How long does the work take on a Birkenhead conservatory?

A roof replacement on an existing conservatory takes three to five days on site. A brand new conservatory or orangery takes seven to ten days, plus a day or two at the end for cleaning and finishing. We work clean and we don't leave the job half-done overnight.

Will my existing conservatory frames take a Leka roof?

In most cases, yes. The Leka roof is light enough to sit on the vast majority of conservatory frames installed across Birkenhead since the late 1990s. We check the existing structure at the survey and confirm suitability before any work is quoted. If reinforcement is needed, that's part of the price - no surprises later.
